Speech and Articulation
Speech and articulation skills are how clearly we produce sounds, words and sentences so that others can understand us. Speech includes sounds, syllables, rhythm and intonation. Articulation focuses on how the tongue, lips, jaw and palate work together to form specific speech sounds.
Difficulties with speech and articulation might sound like unclear speech, “baby talk”, lisping, leaving sounds out, or substituting one sound for another (for example, saying “tat” for “cat”). This can make it harder for children and young adults to be understood by family, friends, teachers, employers and the wider community, and may impact confidence and participation.
At Sound Bites Therapy Services, we assess speech and articulation to identify which sounds and patterns need support. Therapy is tailored, engaging and evidence-based, using play, structured practice and functional activities. We provide clear guidance and home practice strategies so families and support teams can help build clearer, more confident speech in everyday situations.
Three of our clinicians have completed additional, specialised training in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). This means we can offer targeted assessment and therapy for children with motor planning difficulties, using evidence-based approaches and intensive practice to support clearer, more accurate speech over time. We are able to use DTTC, Rest and Nuffield to support children with CAS.
