Let’s get down
to basics.

Language

We support children and teenagers with understanding and using language, including following instructions, building vocabulary, forming sentences and telling stories. Therapy is play-based and/or functional, with practical strategies for families and educators to use at home, kindy, school and in everyday community activities.

Receptive and expressive language skills are the foundations of understanding and using spoken and written language in everyday life.

Receptive language is how we take in and make sense of what we hear or read. It includes understanding words, sentences, questions, stories and instructions. Difficulties with receptive language might look like not following directions, appearing “tuned out”, or struggling to understand classroom or workplace information.

Expressive language is how we share our thoughts, needs and ideas. It includes using words, sentences, grammar and storytelling, both spoken and written. Difficulties with expressive language might look like short or unclear sentences, trouble finding the right words, or difficulty explaining events.

At Sound Bites Therapy Services, we assess receptive and expressive language to understand each person’s strengths and challenges. We then provide individualised, evidence-based therapy and practical strategies for families, educators and support teams to build clearer understanding, more confident communication and greater participation at home, school, work and in the community.
